Cutting Edge Group (CEG) has signed new investment deals for the upcoming Parker and Looper and will provide investment in music budgets and music supervision.

The London-based company advances funding for a film’s music budget, including scoring, clearances and music supervision, as well as in-kind services. CEG then recoups its investment via soundtrack and sheet music sales, plus licensing and royalties from international ticket sales and television deals.

In the past 12 months, CEG has invested in this way in The King’s Speech and Drive.

Taylor Hackford recently wrapped production on Parker, which was funded by the Incentive Filmed Fund, Current Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and stars Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez. Sierra / Affinity handles international sales.

Looper from director Rian Johnson is funded by Endgame Entertainment and stars Joseph Gordon Levitt and Bruce Willis. FilmNation is selling international rights.

“These deals all involve films with big casts and noted filmmakers that play on the international level, which is our sweet spot,” CEG chief executive Philip Moross said.

From Variety: Cutting Edge backs 'Looper,' 'Parker' pix

Cutting Edge Films has invested in the upcoming features "Parker" and "Looper" by providing investment in music budgets and music supervision for the films.

Three-year-old Cutting Edge has provided advance funding for more than 140 films, notably "The King's Speech."

"Parker" just wrapped and stars Jason Statham and Jennifer Lopez, and is directed by Taylor Hackford. CEG's investment was done with Incentive Filmed Entertainment, which is funding the film along with Current Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.

"Looper," directed by Rian Johnson from his own screenplay, is funded by Endgame Entertainment and stars Joseph Gordon Levitt and Bruce Willis.

"These deals all involve films with big casts and noted filmmakers that play on the international level, which is our sweet spot," said CEG chief exec Philip Moross.

CEG's business model involves advancing funding for a film's music budget (including scoring, clearances and music supervision) as well as in-kind services. It then recoups its investment via soundtrack and sheet music sales, plus, licensing and royalties from international ticket sales and TV deals.

Cutting Edge announced in May at Cannes that it had invested in romantic comedy "Lola Versus" and Nicolas Winding Refn's actioner "Drive," starring Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan and Christina Hendricks.

In 2008, Cutting Edge received an initial investment of $15 million from investor Aberdeen Asset Management, and set up its first multipicture deal with Joel Silver's Dark Castle Entertainment in 2009.

Aimed at professionals working in advertising, film, television (branding and programming) and gaming, the awards are open to anyone who is involved in the creation, composition, sourcing, licensing, briefing or production of music and sound design for the world of visual media.

"Never before has there been an awards ceremony to celebrate the role of music and sound design in visual media."

Conceived by Nick Payne of The Works, one of London's leading music production companies, together with Dan Neale, Head of Music at the highly-respected advertising agency RKCRY&R, the Music & Sound Awards were born out of a chance conversation.

Nick Payne explains, "Dan and I were talking about media awards ceremonies and we were amazed to discover that there wasn't an awards ceremony to recognise the talent of the 'music and sound to picture' community. We soon found out that many other people felt the same way and that this important sector should be recognized and celebrated. Within days our phones were ringing with offers from people and companies wanting to come on board. Since then, the idea has gone from strength to strength and we firmly believe that not only will 2012 be an outstanding success, but that The Music & Sound Awards will become an integral and regular feature of the annual awards calendar."

Dan Neale underlines the importance of the new awards. "We welcome everybody involved in production to celebrate the role of music and sound design within their finished work. One could argue that music and sound make up at least 50% of the overwhelming majority of visual media, yet there just wasn't enough recognition. Can you imagine a hamlet cigar commercial without Bach's Air on a G String, a Film or TV programme without its score or a video game without sound effects? The music and sound design industry is thriving in all areas of the media and its incredible talent deserves celebration and recognition."

Numerous major name sponsors and media partners have already lined up behind the awards.
Quick to see its huge potential, The Music & Sound Awards 2012 have already attracted sponsorship from a comprehensive and impressive list of prominent names drawn from a wide selection of related sectors - Record Labels: EMI Records, Universal Records. Publishers: Warner Chappell, Kobalt, Bucks Music, Peer Music, Imagem, Music Sales. Music Production Companies: Cutting Edge Music Group, The Works, Eclectic Music, Mcasso, JG Music, Yellow Boat Music, 2110, A-Bomb, Beetroot. Music Supervisors: Soundlounge, The Sync Agency, Woodwork Music, Sound Studios: Scramble, Wave, Factory, The Jungle Group, 750mph, Angell Sound and SNK Studios.

The inaugural Music & Sound Awards have also gained the support of a number of key media partners including: The Reel, Shots, Little Black Book, The Music Publishers Association, The Society for Producers and Composers of Applied Music (PCAM), The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) and Beam TV.

The Categories and Judges.
The awards categories have been created to include the widest possible use of music and sound in visual media. They invite entries from television and cinema commercials, non-broadcast or viral advertising, branding and title sequence, feature films, television programmes and computer games. Each of these areas will be judged for: best original composition, best sound design and best synch/use of existing music. In addition all the entries will be entered for the Impact Award, a Grand Prize to honour the work and people that have made the most significant contribution to the industry over the year.

The final list of the judges for The Music &Sound Awards 2012 is still a closely guarded secret, but what is known is that they are being drawn from all areas of the media industry and will feature some instantly recognisable names active in the world of film, television, music and the media.

An awards night unlike any other and a unique opportunity for the music and media community to come together.
The Music & Sound Awards 2012 will be held at Koko, Camden Town, one of London's most vibrant and popular music venues on February 23rd 2012. The ceremony itself will be unlike any other, (more Rock 'n' Roll than the Ritz).
